Abstract To predict the illumination uniformity of the lighting design for 2-dimensional bar code image collection on cutting tool, this paper analyzed the practical low emitting diode(LED) light source model, its luminescence properties and the light intensity distribution based on a computer aided optical illumination software, built a light source simulation model, and designed a development model according to the practical application requirement. It also simulated and analyzed the three key factors on the impact of LED illumination uniformity, implemented experiments based on simulation, contrasted the simulation and experimental results by fitting the curve. The experimental results show that the simulation can correctly predict the actual uniformity of illumination. The research can help the optical system design for identifying 2-dimensional bar code directly marked on cylindrical surface of cutting tool.
