On June 18, Clarivate released the 2024 edition of the Journal Citation Reports? (JCR?). Twenty-four academic journals from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) were indexed, with 22 receiving impact factors. Notably, 13 journals were ranked in the first quartile (Q1), and 10 were listed among the top 10 journals globally in their respective disciplines. This highlights the vigorous development and increasing international competitiveness of SJTU’s academic journals.    Leading Journals Scale New Heights, Carrying the Voice of Chinese Academia Across Multiple Disciplines The journal Nano-Micro Letters has reached a new milestone with an impressive impact factor of 36.3. It ranks 3rd among Chinese-sponsored academic journals and 55th globally. The journal has been listed among the world’s top 100 journals for two consecutive years. Significantly, within its discipline, both the impact factor and the number of published articles have surpassed those of Nature Nanotechnology, a sub-journal of Nature. In the disciplines of Materials Science, Multidisciplinary, and Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Nano-Micro Letters ranks among the global top six. This is the highest ranking ever achieved by a nanotechnology journal from China, marking a new height in the field. The Journal of Ocean Engineering and Science has achieved an impact factor of 11.8. For three consecutive years, it has ranked first globally in the disciplines of Engineering, Marine and Engineering, and Ocean. The journal is widely recognized by scholars worldwide.   Addressing National Strategic Priorities by Filling Gaps with Journals in Emerging Fields Chip, the world’s first comprehensive international journal dedicated to the chip industry, has received its inaugural impact factor of 7.1. It ranked in Q1 in three disciplines: Engineering, Electrical & Electronic; Optics; and Physics, Applied. The journal operates under the guiding principle of “All About Chip.” Rooted in the development needs of China’s chip industry, Chip focuses on transformative information technologies and cutting-edge technologies, such as integrated chip innovation. It aims to establish an international academic platform for collaboration to help address critical “bottleneck” technological challenges. Carbon Neutrality is the world’s first comprehensive academic journal dedicated to the carbon neutrality sector, with its inaugural impact factor of 12.5. It ranks 8th globally in the fields of Green & Sustainable Science & Technology and is placed within the top 15 in Energy & Fuels. The journal has made significant contributions to global climate change research by providing feasible solutions and best practices for achieving net-zero emissions. Superconductivity, the only global superconductivity journal in JCR Q1, has an impact factor of 6.3, marking a substantial increase from last year. The journal leverages superconductivity technology as its core focus, addressing China's significant R&D demands in this field. It serves as a global platform for uniting research elites and consolidating collective expertise, driving the industrialization of superconductivity. Interdisciplinary Sciences: Computational Life Sciences has an impact factor of 3.9 and ranks 9th globally in the discipline of Mathematical & Computational Biology. At its inception, the journal invited Nobel Prize laureate in Physiology Luc Montagnier to contribute an article. Since then, it has consistently focused on cross-discipline fields such as medical big data, artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics. By fostering innovation in these areas, the journal addresses critical challenges in human health and drives advancements in the life sciences.   Strengthening Strategic Coordination and Leadership to Build a New Academic Ecosystem Through Clustered Networks Moreover, thanks to the strategic guidance of SJTU’s “14th Five-Year Plan” for journal development, several journals, including Translational Neurodegeneration, Molecular Horticulture, China Finance Review International, General Psychiatry, Translational Research, Journal of Management Analytics, and Frontiers of Narrative Studies, have maintained stable positions in the global Q1 quartile within their respective disciplines. Picture this: in the morning light, cars glide along city roads, their batteries replenished wirelessly in real time by underground superconducting wireless charging system. Electric aircraft equipped with superconducting propulsion system skim across the river, heading towards distant horizons. A superconducting maglev train cruises steadily at 1,000 km/h, cutting travel time from Beijing to Shanghai to just over an hour. As the train leaves the tunnel, vast fields in the Taklamakan Desert come into view, now a high-tech agricultural hub. Hovering above, fusion-powered energy spheres bathe crops in light, transforming what was once barren land into a thriving green oasis. From the promise of limitless energy through controlled nuclear fusion, to electric aviation, superconductivity, with its extraordinary physical properties, is poised to transform technology and daily life. Controlled Nuclear Fusion Controlled nuclear fusion offers a fundamental solution to humanity’s energy challenge, making it a top strategic priority for nations worldwide. Among fusion technologies, magnetic confinement fusion using superconducting magnets holds the most promise for practical application. Its core mechanism relies on powerful toroidal magnetic fields generated by superconducting coils to contain ultra-hot plasma within a vacuum chamber, creating a “magnetic cage.” Inside such reactors, extreme temperatures coexist: superconducting magnets require cryogenic conditions below -200°C to maintain their zero-resistance state, while the confined deuterium-tritium plasma burns at over 100 million degrees Celsius, akin to trapping the sun inside a refrigerator. This remains one of the most challenging feats in modern engineering. Recent breakthroughs in high-temperature superconducting (HTS) materials and magnet technology, which generate stronger magnetic fields at higher operational temperatures compared to traditional low-temperature superconductors, are now key to revolutionizing fusion reactors and achieving commercial power generation. Superconducting Maglev Trains China’s high-speed maglev train (600 km/h) is currently in testing and nearing the limits of speed in atmospheric. Superconducting maglev technology levitates the train above its tracks, eliminating mechanical friction. When paired with low-pressure vacuum tubes to reduce air resistance, this creates a “low-vacuum tube maglev transportation system”, theoretically enabling speeds exceeding 1,000 km/h, faster than most commercial airplanes. Such “land jets” could turn cross-country commutes between major cities into one-hour trips, redefining regional connectivity. Electric Aircraft The shift toward transportation electrification continues, but aviation faces unique hurdles. Aircraft are weight-sensitive, and the power density and lightweighting of electric propulsion systems remain critical bottlenecks. High-temperature superconductors, with current densities over 50 times greater than traditional copper conductors, could dramatically boost the power density of onboard systems like motors, cables, and energy storage, making them the optimal path for electric aviation. Countries like France, the U.S., and Russia have already begun integrating HTS technology into aircraft electrification. China, too, is advancing research, outlined in its 2019 White Paper on the Development of Electric Aircraft, which envisions a 250-passenger hybrid-electric aircraft with a 3,500 km range. Collaborations between the Chinese Aeronautical Establishment and universities are underway to develop superconducting power systems. However, a global challenge remains: the lack of efficient superconducting motors and generators has slowed progress. Yet this transition offers China a strategic opportunity. By pioneering megawatt-class high-density superconducting motors and lightweight onboard power systems, combined with expertise in batteries and electric vehicle tech, China could leapfrog traditional aviation paradigms. Over a century, superconductivity has evolved from laboratory curiosities in liquid helium-cooled coils to a key for overcoming energy loss. Recently, Elsevier, as the publisher, received notification from Clarivate Analytics that following a rigorous selection and evaluation process, Science in One Health (SOH) has been officially accepted into the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) database. All previously published articles will be retrospectively indexed in Web of Science within the next two months, with the journal’s first Impact Factor expected to be released in June 2026. Since its launch two and a half years ago, SOH has been successively indexed by the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), Scopus, PubMed Central (PMC), and ESCI. These milestones signify that the journal’s academic quality and editorial standards have gained full recognition from the international academic and publishing communities, laying a solid foundation for its further global expansion and progression toward becoming a world-class scientific journal. On March 20, 2025, the 2025 CAS Journal Ranking was officially released. On January 9-10, 2025 — The Mechanobiology in Medicine (MBM) organized the Orthopaedic Journals Forum during the Symposium on Advanced Technologies in Orthopaedics. Leading orthopaedic journals, including Bone Research, Journal of Orthopaedic Translation, and Orthopedic Surgery, gathered to discuss the critical role of journals in foundational research and in driving innovation in emerging orthopaedic technologies.   The forum spearheaded a transformative integration of foundational and clinical research, facilitating cross-disciplinary dialogues that propelled medical scholarship forward. The 2024 Editors-in-chief Conference of SJTU Medical-Engineering Interdisciplinary Journal Alliance successfully sought new ideas and methods to empower medical-engineering interdisciplinary journals, aiming to construct a collaborative academic ecosystem for medical-engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, to practice joint consultation, joint construction, and shared benefits, and to promote "organized journal management." The conference was successfully held on the afternoon of December 20 in the second-floor lecture hall of the Science and Education Building at Ruijin Hospital. Over 30 editors-in-chief and editorial directors from journals of Shanghai Jiao Tong University participated in the event. Since its establishment in 2024, the SJTU Medical-Engineering Interdisciplinary Journal Alliance has been committed to building a collaborative academic ecosystem for medical-engineering, practicing joint consultation, joint construction, and shared benefits, and promoting "organized journal management." On November 6, 2024, the first special lecture of the "Med-X Journal Young Scholars Forum," co-hosted by Med-X Journal and the Ministry of Education's Engineering Research Center for Digital Medicine, was successfully held. The lecture attracted numerous scholars from universities and research institutions such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, Wuhan University, Donghua University, Sichuan University, and Xi'an Jiaotong University. Researcher Li Zhou from the Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Nanosystems, Chinese Academy of Sciences, served as the guest speaker for this lecture, presenting on the topic "Development and Application of Self-Powered Medical Devices." The event was chaired by Associate Researcher Sui Xiaohong from the School of Biomedical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Researcher Li Zhou began with the importance of electrical activity in human life activities and delved into the development history of electrical stimulation technology and its wide application in clinical settings. Based on the principle of triboelectric generators, he innovatively developed self-powered medical devices, particularly focusing on clinical issues to create a new type of self-powered wireless cardiac pacemaker with independent intellectual property rights. Additionally, he explored electronic drugs and cell traction force measurement devices. The successful holding of this forum provided young scholars with an opportunity for in-depth exchange with renowned experts in the field and offered a valuable academic platform for the latest advancements in the field of biomedical engineering.
