Abstract An optimal material selection method of vehicle was proposed by combining a sequential response surface method and the simulation annealing algorithm. The method was applied to the safety study of side impact, by which the materials of each part of the collision site were selected on the optimization design. The results show that a reasonable material match of side collision parts is achieved by optimizing design, and the safety of side impact of the vehicle has the notable improvement.
