Abstract When large scale arrays are divided into subarrays of equal sizes a difficulty with grating lobes is encountered during scanning. The condition of producing the grating lobe was discussed at first, and on this basis, a new method of beam scanning at uniform subarray level was proposed for the purpose of reducing the grating lobe by dividing the scanning region. The fundamental rules of scanning regional division and how to optimize the weights of all angles in each scanning region at elements level and subarray level by particle swarm optimization (PSO) were also discussed. As an example, an array of three subarray with four elements was simulated and the results show that the maximum sidelobe level can be reduced to -22 dB in each scanning region. This approach also can be used for multibeam forming.
