Abstract The part manufacturing model, setup and operation were developed to solve the setup planning of the thinwalled turning part. A mathematical model of setup planning was introduced based on discussions about machine types, tool approach directions and operation procedure constraints. The setup planning was divided into three subproblems to decrease the problem solution space according to grading for the thinwalled turning part. An algorithm based on rules, graph theory and clustering was introduced to determine setup planning procedure and operation groups in the process of solving the subproblems. A complete setup planning was put forward for the thinwalled turning part. Finally, an example of an aviation part was illustrated to prove the feasibility of the proposed model.
