Abstract The labyrinth sealing displacer was designed to improve the operating stability and cooling performance of the 10 K Gifford-McMahon (G-M) cryocoolers. The effects of the traditional piston-ring sealing and the labyrinth sealing on the cooling performance were experimentally compared. The effects of the displacer materials and charge pressures on the sealing performance were also tested. The displacer made of stainless steel has the same shrinkage as the piston cylinder at low temperatures and its sealing performance is superior to the displacer made of fiber-glass. The charge pressure has no obvious effect on the sealing performance, but the larger cooling capacity can be achieved at higher charge pressure.
