Abstract A finite element vibration analysis model was established to investigate the attenuation of the vibration caused by urban elevated railways. Then the vibration attenuation along the elevated structure and the surrounding ground was calculated in different conditions. The effects of structural dimensions and material parameters on the attenuation of vibration were analyzed, and a formula for fast prediction of the transmission loss of structural vibration energy was derived according to the results of finite element calculation. In order to validate the formula, vibration measurements were conducted at an elevated railway and its surrounding ground. It is shown that the trend of the measurement results is consistent with the prediction results with an acceptable accuracy. A minor effect of structural dimensions and material parameters on the attenuation of vibration is observed. The conclusion is meaningful to the control of environmental vibration and fast prediction of the vibration around the elevated rail and its surroundings.
