Abstract In order to improve the efficiency of automobile taillight assembly, a method of robust design based on norms of influence coefficient matrix was employed in taillight area. A model of the mathematical relation between the deviations of screw joints and observation points in taillight area was established. Three objective functions, namely, 1norm of row vectors, condition number and norm of the inverse matrix of the influence coefficient matrix, were used to evaluate the sensitivity of the deviation to assembly structure. Taking the taillight area of some car as an example, finite element simulation was used to obtain the numerical solution of the mathematical model, then the assemble structure was optimized. Quality problems of the production site verify the predictive accuracy of the mathematical model.
