Abstract Instantaneous torque is an important parameter for diagnosis and control of diesel engine. It is an effective method to reconstruct instantaneous torque based on instantaneous speed. A filter based on multiple tracking-differentiators was designed to process signals with both high frequent and low frequent noise, and the methodology was detailed given. Simulation study was carried out on the measured instantaneous speed of 16PC2-6 marine diesel engine. Following the dynamic model of propulsion system, indicated torque of diesel engine was estimated according to tracking and differentiator signals of instantaneous speed. The simulation results show that high quality tracking and differentiator signals of instantaneous speed can be gained by adopting proposed multiple tracking-differentiators, which is suitable for engine torque reconstruction.
