Abstract In order to clarify the detection index and evaluation standard for evaluation of the density of rockfill using high-density Rayleigh-wave exploration, a series of 2-D FEM models with different density of rockfill based on typical function layer were established. The Rayleigh-wave exploration was simulated to obtain the relationship between propagation velocity in rockfill with different density and density of rockfill by frequency-wave number analysis. Besides, the highdensity Rayleigh-wave exploration is applied to the investigation of the Wusong Jetty in Shanghai. The data acquisition and analysis method were introduced in detail. The distribution of velocity with depth was obtained by dispersion and inversion analysis. Finally, the spatial distribution of density was evaluated according to the relationship between velocity and density of rockfill.
