Abstract The advanced grade evaluation method for a selfelevating drilling unit was proposed. The corresponding evaluation criteria system and calculation method were used to assess the capability of selfelevating drilling unit. The availability of evaluation criteria system and calculation method for selfelevating drilling unit was proved. The evaluation result may be used to carry out the position in advanced level in the same type platform, appraising if the selfelevating drilling unit achieves the desired results and finding the exist problems to guide the work in the future. At the same time, this evaluation criteria system and calculation method will be beneficial to the national standard of the function level grade valuation system of ships and ocean structures.
