Abstract Based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model, the wind pressure distribution and wind-loading shape coefficients on gable roof of low-rise buildings with cornices were studied by using stabilized fluid finite element method. The effects of some key parameters, such as length and height of cornices and roof pitch, on wind pressure distribution upon gable roof and the flow around low-rise buildings were analyzed. The result shows that wind loading shape coefficient on the roof is remarkably affected by vertical cornices, but slightly affected by horizontal cornices which are under strong minus wind pressure environment. Furthermore, the cornices with both vertical and horizontal sections greatly change the wind pressure distribution on the roof.
