Abstract This paper established a finite element model for the cargo areas of the multipurpose ship. It then implemented PSO to optimize complex ship structures using matlab to call the finite element software. This approach obtained relatively better results compared with the results obtained by using the GA algorithm, validating the application of PSO in the optimization of complex ship structures.
