Processing English Mono-morphemic Nouns and Verbs for English Learners of Chinese: An ERP Study

摘要

本文利用ERP技术以英语二语中的单词素名词与动词为实验材料,在控制了受试对单词频率的情况下,研究了中国英语学习者对英语单词素名词和动词的认知神经机制。包括两个问题:(1)受试加工英语单词素名词和动词的脑电是否一致?(2)词频是否影响受试对英语单词素名词和动词的加工?通过对受试加工英语单词素名词和动词诱发的三个脑电成分的对比分析,发现在P150成分上词性和频率主效应均不显著;在P250成分上词性主效应显著,英语二语单词素动词比单词素名词产生了更大的P250,词类与词频的交互效应边缘性显著;在N400成分上词性主效应显著,英语二语单词素名词比单词素动词产生了更大的N400,词频效应边缘性显著。据此,我们认为中国英语学习者使用了不同的神经机制加工处理了英语二语的单词素名词和动词,词频影响了受试对英语二语单词素名词和动词的加工,英语二语中的单词素词存在语义层面的名动分离现象,并与词频有关。

Abstract

The paper investigates the underlying mechanism of English mono-morphemic nouns and verbs for in English learners of Chinese based on the data obtained by ERP technology. It mainly investigates two questions: (1) Do English learners of Chinese share the same underlying mechanism in processing English mono-morphemic nouns and verbs? (2) Does word frequency influence processing English mono-morphemic nouns and verbs? By analyzing and comparing P150, P250 and N400 ERP components elicited by English nouns and verbs respectively, we find that there exist significant main effects of word class in P250 and N400 components, that the interactive effect of word class and frequency is marginally significant in terms of P250, and that the main effect of word frequency is marginally significant in terms of N400. Therefore, it is concluded that English learners of Chinese employ different mechanism to process English mono-morphemic nouns and verbs, and that word frequency has an influence in processing English mono-morphemic nouns and verbs, and that the semantically driven noun-verb disassociation can be found in the process of English mono-morphemic nouns and verbs and it is affected by word frequency.
