Multilingual Research in a Post-COVID Era: Reflection and Prospection

摘要

新冠肺炎疫情让我们意识到,身处互联互通的整体系统之中,多语言多文化的世界仅靠英语无法建立公平、公正、有效的全球沟通体系。英语占主导地位的知识生产与传播体系映射了中心-边缘结构性不平等,体现了知识生产领域的地缘政治。“英语至上”的语言不平等裹挟着认识论不平等,进一步提高了英语中心知识体系的地位,固化了语言为导向的学术研究的单语思维定式。在此背景下,面对后疫情时代的全球新格局,如何打破固有的全球沟通体系和构建多语共存的人类命运共同体成为语言为导向的学术研究者面临的重要挑战。近年来,随着“多语转向”,应用语言学的一大分支“多语研究”蓬勃发展。但是在单语思维定式影响下,大量的多语研究仍被单语思维主导,陷入单语认识论的困境。长此以往,只会进一步抬高英语至上的地位、加剧全球知识生产和沟通的结构性不平等。针对这个问题,我们提出,应从研究范式、理论视角、研究对象三个维度构建后疫情时代多语研究新框架。就研究范式而言,采用“多语地研究”新路径,即在整个研究过程中体现一种以上语言的贡献,激活多语资源、突破单语惯习;就理论视角而言,积极探索不同语言背后的认识论传统,寻找替代性认识论,构建研究的认识论多样性;就研究对象而言,在以英语学习为研究对象主体的基础上,丰富研究对象的多样性,关注边缘群体,拓展理论边界。我们认为,当今学界需要正视语言层级化的现实,一方面,英语是我们在国际学界发出声音的渠道;另一方面,我们也肩负责任和使命,基于本土事实,参考本土知识系统,做出中国的多语研究。我们应在全球政治经济格局不确定的局面下,努力探索在人类命运共同体精神引导下多语发声的模式。
