The present paper, based on the use of the English-Chinese Parallel Corpus of Shakespeare’s plays, investigates the similarities and differences in the representation of the appraisal meaning of “good” between the Chinese translations of Shakespeare’s plays by Liang Shiqiu and Zhu Shenghao. The results of the investigation show that the two Chinese translations represent the appraisal meaning of “good” quite well, but compared with Liang’s translation, Zhu’s translation exhibit greater tendency towards explicitation, intensification and sharpening. It is argued that this difference is attributable to the differences between the two translations in terms of translation purposes, target readerships and the involvement by the translators.
