Abstract Sea-floor controlled source electromagnetic method is employed in the sea-floor engineering and resource exploration. Vertical magnetic dipole device is used for dragging measurement. The influence of induced electromotive force curve caused by overlying seawater and different dipole moments and the
theoretical form of cross-section diagram are both analyzed. Coil miniaturization research has been performed. Parameters of magnetic dipole device, which are used to sea-floor detection, can be obtained by calculation and experiments. Submarine model experiments and oil pipeline detection experiments are fulfilled based on the above theoretical study，thus, accurately detecting the seafloor abnormal accidents and the position, depth of oil pipeline.
