    Elevating Global Academic Dialogue: The Successful Second Forum on Excellence in University Journal Building

  • From January 7 to 9, 2024, Harbin played host to the successful Second Forum on Excellence in Journal Construction in Colleges and Universities, organized by the University Alliance for Excellent Journals (UAEJ) and hosted by the prestigious Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT). The forum's primary goal was to establish a robust communication platform for university journal management professionals, fostering in-depth discussions on the construction, development, and top-level design of outstanding journals. By facilitating the exchange of experiences in university journal management, the forum effectively contributed to the promotion and advancement of university journals' development and construction.

    Representatives from more than 40 esteemed institutions, including Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Beihang University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Tongji University, Shandong University, Chongqing University, Sichuan University, Central South University, Tianjin University, China University of Mining and Technology, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Harbin Institute of Technology, and others, actively participated in the event. Notable attendees included Liu Xingping, Director of the Science and Technology Innovation Department of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Wang Su, Director of the Science and Technology Journal Department, and Wang Chunhui, Director of the Publication Department of the Propaganda Department of Heilongjiang Provincial Party Committee. The conference received distinguished guests like Elsevier and the support of key sponsors such as E-Tiller, K.Z. Science, and Founder. The opening ceremony, conducted by Professor Li Longqiu, Director of the Journal Center at HIT, marked the commencement of conference.

     

    Shuai Yong, Standing Committee member of the Party Committee and Vice President of HIT, extended a warm welcome to the attending experts and scholars in his address. He provided a concise overview of the journal management concept and the present state of journal construction at HIT. Shuai Yong expressed the institute's commitment to enhancing collaboration with the CAST, Publication Division of the Propaganda Department of Heilongjiang Province, and all affiliated institutions within the Alliance. The aim is to elevate the quality of journal management and strengthen the university's influence in international academic discourse.

     

    In her address, Wang Su emphasized the significance of university journals within the realm of scientific and technological publications. She highlighted the enduring importance that the CAST places on the endeavors related to university journals. Wang Su expressed her hope that the Alliance for Excellence in University Journals Construction would continue to play a pivotal role in fostering the development and clustering of university journals, contributing significantly to this essential facet of academic discourse.

     

    Cai Yunze, Deputy Director of the Journal Center at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, along with Jiang Wei from the University of Science and Technology Beijing, Zhang Feng from Beihang University, and Chen Jinlong from Tianjin University, took on the role of guest hosts. Ren Shengli, Editor-in-Chief of Science China Press, Zhang Wei, Editorial Board Member of The Innovation, Li Longqiu, Director of the Journal Center at HIT, Shi Lei, Director of the Journal Center at Tsinghua University Press, Xu Jiaying, President of the Journal Center at Zhejiang University Press, Zhang Cong, Director of the Journal Center at Xi'an Jiaotong University, Yuan Wenquan, President of the Journal Center at Chongqing University, and Zhou Yingzhi, Vice President of Science and Technology Journal at Shandong University, delivered insightful speeches under the theme of "Science and Technology in China." Zhou Yingzhi covered various topics, including "Understanding and Thinking about the Goal of Excellence in Journal Construction," "The Innovation is a Rising Star," "Thinking about the Deep Integration of Discipline Construction and Journal Construction," and "Tsinghua University's Journal Development." They also shared experiences on topics such as "Tsinghua University's participation in ALPSP&STM," "Zhejiang University's sub-project of promoting excellent talents with international publishers," and "Xi'an Jiaotong University's journal platform construction," among others. The presentations focused on enhancing academic organizational strength, promoting high-quality development of academic journals, and offering a perspective on the future of the Forum on Excellence in Journal Construction in Universities. The speakers shared valuable experiences and insights from their respective units, contributing to the overall discourse on journal management and development within the alliance.

    Simultaneously, Zhou Wenyi, Director of Elsevier Learning Association, Zou Tingting, Director of China Market Communication at Elsevier Periodicals Department, Ye Hu, Manager of E-Tiller, Wu Lingbo, General Manager of K.Z. Science, and Zhou Kun, Director of Product Marketing at Founder, provided analyses and insights into the construction of periodicals in universities. They explored how their respective enterprises could contribute to and support the development of these periodicals.

    In parallel, Liu Xingping led discussions with representatives from select university participants to delve into research on the construction of scientific and technological journal clustering. Wang Chunhui, Director of the Publication Department of the Propaganda Department of Heilongjiang Provincial Party Committee, and Lv Qiang, Director of the Academic Department of Heilongjiang Provincial Association for Science and Technology, actively participated in these engaging activities.

     

    UAEJ, initiated and established by the Journal Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is committed to actively implementing the spirit outlined in the Opinions on Deepening Reform and Cultivating World-class Science and Technology Journals, jointly endorsed by the CAST, the Propaganda Department, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Science and Technology. The alliance is dedicated to expediting the construction of world-class science and technology journals. It aims to bolster the substantive development of academic journals at universities and colleges participating in the Plan of Action for Excellence in Science and Technology Journals of China. Through scientific management, UAEJ seeks to elevate the international academic influence of these academic journals and construct top-tier journals for universities and colleges infused with the spirit, values, and strength of China.
