Abstract: This paper, taken hermeneutics as the theoretical framework, is devoted to an analysis of how D.C. Lau translated The Analects by means of writing introduction, attaching appendix and translating with notes. More attention will be given to interpret how he revised his translations in three English versions by improving his understanding of the original text on the basis of his own “pre-understanding” and trying to fuse his horizon as a translator with horizons of the original text, expected readers and the published English version of The Analects. By D. C. Lau’s meticulous translation, the essence of Chinese Confucian classics has been well interpreted to the western world and a different way of thinking from the West has been revealed in the process of spreading the profound Chinese culture.
