文章旨在梳理Halliday有关粤语方言的研究与思考,尝试在系统功能语言学的框架内探讨Halliday所关注的方言研究的一般原则和具体方法、方言特征的描写与解释视角、方言研究的应用价值和研究方向等问题。文章分析认为,普通语言学意识、适用语言学意识、语言的层次性、系统性和社会性等观点贯穿于Halliday方言研究的各个阶段。随着系统功能语言学理论的建立与发展,其早期的相关思想得到新的补充与解释,为系统功能语言学视角下的方言研究奠定了理论基础,指明了发展方向,对当前的粤语方言研究、汉语方言研究,乃至系统功能语言学框架内汉语分析体系的构建都颇有启发。
This paper reviews M. A. K. Halliday's studies on the Cantonese dialect, with the focus on principles and methods used in dialect studies. The review shows that systemic functional ideas such as language as social semiotic and language as multi-stratal are clearly reflected in Halliday's approach to dialect studies. By focusing on the study of the Cantonese dialect, the paper illustrates both the nature of systemic functional linguistics as a general linguistics and the characteristics of systemic functional linguistics as appliable linguistics.
