在以往的批评文献中,麦琪·野火在很多评论家眼里无足轻重,即便论及,也多半被当作分析其他人物的比照对象。此乃司各特小说研究中的一个不小的审美疏忽。本文以为,这一人物甚为重要,从人物形象塑造的角度看,虽存有朦胧空缺,但符合理据,不失真实可信;从文本构建功能的角度看,她处于整部小说叙事结构的关键位置,勾连了故事两大情节板块,链接了小说中的所有主要人物;从历史史实与虚构小说的关系看,她是两者之间的媒介,是司各特将故事植入历史土壤的得力工具。
