小说题名具有吸引读者、暗示情节、贯穿线索、制造悬念等作用。小说题名的翻译甚至比原作取名更费心思。被誉为“翻译英雄”的沙博理总共翻译了长篇、中篇、短篇小说98部/篇,对题名的翻译可谓匠心独运。本文通过定量分析,从承袭原文、灵活再现、内容显化和巧用标点等方面探讨沙博理小说题名的翻译艺术,认为达到了传义且传神、原汁添新味的艺术境界。沙博理小说题名翻译体现了良好的翻译思维和再创作艺术对中国文学“走出去”具有启发价值。
The title of a novel or story serves as magnet to its readers, suggesting the main plots, indicating the major clues and creating a suspense. It is much more challenging for a translator to translate the title of such a work than to entitle the work for its writer. Sidney Shapiro, who was honored “hero of translation”, completed translation of 98 Chinese novels and stories, and his translation of the titles of such works is a result of his inventiveness. The paper, by means of quantitative analysis, probes into Shapiro's maneuvers of title translations from such aspects as following the original, dynamic representation, content particularization and employing punctuation. The authors contend that such maneuvers results in a combination of semantical expressiveness and spiritual faithfulness, investing new glamor into the original. A masterly way of translation thinking and re-creative artistry Shapiro illustrates in his transfer of the titles of Chinese novels and stories proves an insight into Chinese literary works “going-out”.
