文学作品中的修辞认知有着各种各样的功能,是文学性的重要生成机制。本文首先探讨了《红楼梦》修辞认知的主要功能,包括表达小说主旨、暗示人物命运、塑造人物性格、增强语言美感等,然后分析了《红楼梦》英译中修辞认知的三大转换模式,即从修辞认知到概念认知、从修辞认知到修辞认知和从概念认知到修辞认知。相对杨译而言,霍译的灵活性更大,出现了较多的从概念认知到修辞认知的转换,体现出较强的主体性,一定程度上提高了译文本身的文学性及其作为独立文本的价值。
Rhetorical cognition, as a kind of generating mechanism for literariness, has various kinds of functions in literary works. This paper first analyzes the major functions of rhetorical cognition in Hong Lou Meng, including expressing the themes of the novel, implying the fates of characters, shaping the disposition of characters, enhancing the linguistic beauty of the novel and so on. Then the three conversion patterns of rhetorical cognition in two English versions of Hong Lou Meng is analyzed, namely, from rhetorical cognition in the original text to conceptual cognition in the target text, from rhetorical cognition to rhetorical cognition and from conceptual cognition to rhetorical cognition. It is found that compared with Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang’s translation, Hawkes’ translation has relatively more cases of converting conceptual cognition into rhetorical cognition, which, to a certain degree, embodies his subjectivity and enhances the literariness of his translation and its value as an independent text.
