本文尝试对法律英语的古体词进行功能分析,探析其作为评价资源的可能性及其评价意义的衍生路径。研究发现:(1)与外来借词不同,法律英语中的古体词更多充当虚词的角色,很少直接作为专业术语出现;(2)古体词作为内在连接词更倾向于标示语篇内部的逻辑修辞关系,取决于发话人对事物或事件关系的主观认识,是发话人对语篇世界的组织和论证;(3)古体词有评价潜势,可作为一种间接评价手段,其评价意义临时构建在法律语境中,在正式性语旨的刺激下,古体词作为连接手段的原型描述意义得以衍生,显示自身的庄重性和晦涩感。古体词与法律语言的其他特征相结合,在语篇中呈现出法律权威性的累积传递效果,以达到法律语言使用者操纵受众的目的。
