Objective To evaluate the long-term efficacy of propranolol for giant parotid infantile hemangiomas. Method From March 2009 to October 2009, 11 cases of giant parotid hemangiomas were treated with propranolol orally (2 mg/Kg·d). When children aged 8-12 months, propranolol treatment was stopped and the long-term efficacy was observed. Results More than 5 years follow-up had been completed in each patient (mean 69.5 ±4.8 months). Excellent results were observed in 10 cases (90.9%). Among them, a little skin laxity and red spot were residual in 6 cases, and further therapy was necessary to improve appearance. One case (9.1%) still had significant lump and erythema at 5 years follow-up. Conclusion The long-term efficacy of propranolol in treating gaint parotid infantile hemangiomas is not good enough. Other therapy is still necessary for the residual mass and skin lesion.
