Abstract The electromagnetic characteristics of an ionized gas layer are crucial to measure the degree of air ionization in the simulation-calculated flow field and to obtain the dielectric constant of each vertex under the flow field mesh. In electromagnetic computation, the calculation platform cannot operate if the mesh is too dense or the tetrahedral elements are not uniform, therefore the mesh must be simplified. This work has developed a Monte Carlo stochastic algorithm-based method for mesh simplification to resolve the problem when the number of mesh is higher than the computing platform or their distribution across scales is uneven. Compared to previous simplification methods, the proposed method is straightforward and user-friendly, with a time complexity of O(N) (where N is the number of vertices) and a space complexity of O(N).
