Abstract To estimate the initial velocity of separate structural fragments under explosion, a numerical simulation method was used to achieve the charge quantity required for different speeds, and experimental verification was conducted. Based on the numerical simulation method, the formula between the initial velocity of separate structural fragments and the Gurney model under the same charge coefficient was produced. The influence of charge height and area on the initial velocity of a fragment was compared. The velocity of separate structural fragments ranged approximately 14%~18% of the corresponding Gurney model. Under the same charge quantity, the initial velocity of the fragment could be increased by at least 28% when increasing the charge area compared with the charge height. The results show that the numerical simulation is in reasonable agreement with the experiment, and the maximum error is within 3.8%. This paper provides a design reference for the initial velocity and charge of separate structural fragments.
