国家形象是国家“软实力”的重要组成部分。国民对国家形象的关注、态度和行动是其国家意识的具体体现。公民的国家意识越强,其维护国家良好形象的思想越坚定、行动越自觉。党的十八大以来,以习近平同志为核心的党中央高度重视国家形象的塑造,强调要重塑四种大国形象,展示真实立体全面的中国,展现可信、可爱、可敬的中国形象。中央党史和文献研究院翻译的党的二十大报告英文版显示出强烈的国家形象意识,整体上展现了中国共产党可信、可爱、可敬的形象,是向世界展现中国形象的成功范例。同时,从“中外融通”的新表达角度看,这版译文的个别地方值得进一步推敲,包括关于指代人的第三人称代词的使用、不同“优先”单词的选择,以及特定术语的沿用等。

National image is an integral part of national soft power. The attention, attitude and actions that citizens take for their national image reveal the intensity of their national consciousness. The Communist Party of China (CPC), under the leadership of Xi Jinping, has been attaching great importance to the shaping and projection of China’s image as a big country of long civilization, eastern culture, international responsibility and socialism, presenting a true, multi-dimensional, and panoramic view of China and a China that is credible, appealing, and respectable. The English version of the Report to the 20th National Congress of the CPC was the collaborate accomplishment of the national translation team with native speakers of English and has been highly successful on the whole in projecting a positive image for the CPC and for China. However, for better cross-cultural communication, a few words used in the report can be further discussed, such as the third person plural pronoun, words of priorities and a proper noun in particular.
