Discourse Functions of Pragmatic Presupposition in Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go

Abstract: Presupposition is the implicit information or proposition embedded in a sentence or an utterance.As a pragmatic phenomenon,pragmatic presupposition contributes much to the weaving of a literary text.This paper, through analyzing Never Let Me Go, the masterpiece of Kazuo Ishiguro, examines the discourse functions in the literary text from the perspective of pragmatic presupposition. That is, pragmatic presupposition helps to build up the humorous or absurd effects, the economy of linguistic expression, the enhancement of persuasiveness, and the multiple symbolic meanings. The present study hopes to open up new dimensions in the research, while deepening the appreciation of the text.
