Abstract: The subject of practical translation is translators/interpreters. Yet the research on them is far from adequate. Prof. Fang Mengzhi, who has consistently conducted the research on the subject in his studies of translation theories, especially of practical translation theories, has set a good example in this area. In this essay Prof. Fang’s research on the psychology of the translator in work, his emphasis on the social role and creation of the subject of translation shown in translation coursebooks, and his enthusiastic as well as earnest recommendation of practical translators’ translation thoughts and achievements in translation dictionaries are evaluated. It is concluded that Prof. Fang’s research on the subject of translation is his important contribution to the construction of our translation studies, especially to that of practical translation studies. A few suggestions on the further research of this area are also made.
