Abstract: On the basis of a discrimination between the two terms “Identity” and “Role”, the paper expounds the translator’s different roles in the translating process, in which the display of these roles by the translator is the translator’s role shifting process. A full awareness of the nature of this process will immensely contribute to an objective and rational translation criticism. The paper is also devoted to a detailed discussion of the relationship between translator’s role shifting behaviors and the diversity of translations.
