Abstract: This paper reviews M. A. K. Halliday's studies on the Cantonese dialect, with the focus on principles and methods used in dialect studies. The review shows that systemic functional ideas such as language as social semiotic and language as multi-stratal are clearly reflected in Halliday's approach to dialect studies. By focusing on the study of the Cantonese dialect, the paper illustrates both the nature of systemic functional linguistics as a general linguistics and the characteristics of systemic functional linguistics as appliable linguistics.
