Abstract: Literature shows that the explanations of metafunctions for formal markers are at odds with semiotic and functional commitment in systemic functional linguistics. This paper, based on the covert categories or the cryptotypes proposed by B. L. Whorf (1956) and the clines by M. A. K. Halliday (2014), takes the crypto-functional exploration of formal marker prop it as a case study. The purpose is to eliminate the contradictory explanations in metafunctions of formal markers through the cryptotypes. In light of the cryptotypes, the metafunctions of prop it can reach unified accountability and the theoretical hypothesis that “language forms should be accounted for by their functions” has been well verified.
