Abstract: This thesis aims to disclose the attitudes hidden in English newspaper editorials based on lexical grammar theory with an analysis of the highest frequent word and its collocation, colligation, semantic preference and prosody. The author analyzes detailedly the attitudinal words and clauses in the typical colligations based on the appraisal theory and conceptual blending theory. The study finds that the editorials seldom use affect system and mainly use judgment and appreciation system to express the attitudes, have various attitudes toward the relationship between China and different countries and positive attitudes towards China's issues and China's behaviors and strategies, and frequently implicitly express attitudes to improve appraisal's objectivity.
