A New Approach to the Generation of Chinese Compounds: From the Perspective of Distributed Morphology

Abstract

Different from lexicalism in the studies of word-formation, Distributed Morphology (DM) assumes that there is no difference between the generating of words and phrases. Within the framework of DM and based on the insights of the related studies and diachronic evidence from Chinese, this paper argues that Chinese compounds are the products of functional projection. On the basis of the discovery and the generating model, the process of generating compounds is shown. Furthermore, the mistakes of related studies are discussed in order to reveal the value of our study.
