Abstract

In the early 20th century, the well-developing national publishing industry in Shanghai spurred on the translation and distribution of humanities and science books. Shanghai thus became a modern national publishing and cultural center. With the national revolution advancing, Western Red Classics has been introduced and translated to China one after another. Among numerous publishing institutions, the Commercial Press, Kaiming Bookstore, Zhonghua Bookstore, Guanghua Bookstore, and Lifestyle Bookstore played an active role in promoting the wide spreading of Red Classics in China. The group of professional translators, including the representative translators, such as Guo Moruo, Hu Zhongzhi, Bi Xiushao and so on, began to form and has made outstanding contributions to the translation and publication of Western Red Classics in China.
