Abstract

“Nation Building” and “National/State Image Construction” have been hot topics in translation studies in present world, and the overall trend of the studies is going to break away from “Europe-centralism”. However, “nation” and “sate” are two conceptions originally from the western discourse. The interpretation of these two concepts in translation studies of China should align with the Chinese context. In Chinese context, “nation” is highly consistent with “state”, the Chinese nation is not an “imagined community”, but a community is created by people of all ethnic groups of the country along the long history, Therefore, it is rather necessary to rethink the function of translation to Chinese nation-building, and to divide “nation/state-building” in translation into two levels, one is inner building — “national identity”, the other is external building — “state image”, and they are closely related and support each other.
