Abstract For the problem of wireless communication performance reduction due to sea clutter and severe weather encountered in real time images transfer used for battlefield environment monitoring, SPIHT image Compression Algorithm based on wavelets is presented in this paper for the application in airdefense weapon system, using simulation to verify the effectiveness of this algorithm. Compression code stream from infrared seeker images can be generated by image compression for transfer substitution to improve image transfer rate. Simulation result shows that lossless compression ratio is 3 and loss compression ratio could be 32 for 256×256 8 bits gray level infrared image without visual effect reduction. The research achievement can provide theoretical basis for airdefense infrared seeker image compression transfer implementation.
