Abstract To resolve the performance failure of underdetermined DOA estimation of nested arrays under non-uniform noise impact, a nested array DOA estimation algorithm based on Toeplitz matrix reconstruction was developed in this study. First, the covariance matrix of the received data was calculated which enabled the decomposition of the diagonal matrix containing non-uniform noise terms, the selection of the minimum value of diagonal elements to replace other elements, and the reconstruction of the covariance matrix. Then, the received signal after suppressing the non-uniform noise was processed using the KR product, and the array was expanded. The Toeplitz matrix was reconstructed using the processed received signal, and DOA estimation was acquired using eigenvalue decomposition and the MUSIC algorithm. The results show that the proposed method can effectively suppress the non-uniform noise, increase the array aperture, improve the array degree of freedom, and perform better DOA estimation than the existing methods.
