Abstract: The crisis of the English undergraduate program lies in the training of students with the limited language skills and the insistence on humanistic education as its core. Therefore, it is difficult for them to meet the national and social needs for interdisciplinary compound talents. The English undergraduate program is in dire need of a breakthrough by developing English for specific purposes under the discipline of English linguistics. The sub-discipline is committed to cultivating undergraduates to become familiar with the language in humanities and natural sciences besides English and American language and literature. They are trained to have a better understanding of the construction and dissemination of disciplinary knowledge in English and to be equipped with the ability to access and express content in various disciplines and professions in English. The English undergraduate program and its supported disciplines cannot be healthily developed if the needs of the national and social development could not be fully met. This is an urgent problem that needs to be solved when planning tertiary foreign language education in the new era.
