Abstract: Impoliteness is pragmatically rooted in interpersonal interaction. On the basis of identity analysis and with reference to data collected from Weibo, this paper explores pragmatic functions together with interpersonal pragmatic effects of impoliteness; then it divides the development of impoliteness into three sections and analyzes the correlation between identity construction and how impoliteness is triggered, conveyed, received, controlled, countered, managed and resolved. Special attention is paid to research into how participants manipulate and exploit impoliteness offensively and defensively in instances of Weiboing as well as identity construction and negotiation of interactants. A better understanding of impoliteness and its pragmatic functions will hopefully promote the development of impoliteness theories and cyber-pragmatics.
