Abstract: The discussion of the problems the English major faces has been trapped in the paradigm of language teaching. It has ignored the fact that the English major in China has reached such a phase that it has to develop a system of knowledge that befits the purposes and the standards of tertiary education. The so-called “ailments” are in fact not the problems of language teaching.
