What on Earth is Fatally Wrong with English Majors?Discussions with Professor Cai Jigang

Abstract: Professor Cai Jigang of Fudan University, after the speech of Director Wu Yan of the Ministry of Education on the overall rectification of undergraduate teaching order, sat in the right place and criticized English majors about their large-scale training, the inability of teaching content to meet the needs of students, the difficulty of employment of graduates, and the small number of students who continue to take postgraduate examinations in this major. He proceeds to directly meets the major needs of the country and guides English majors from traditional humanistic to instrumental category. This paper, contrary to Professor Cai's viewpoint, intends to defend the right and status of English majors with the so-called “four criteria” proposed by Professor Cai.
