Abstract: Appraisal Theory has been widely applied to analyses of various discourses, among which the appraisal analysis of media discourse has produced fruitful results. However, few researches have been done on the identity construction through appraisal analysis. This paper, based on the Appraisal Theory, analyzes the attitudinal resources employed in the journalistic discourse “Trayvon Martin Could Have Been Me: Obama” published on The Sydney Morning Herald. It is found through the analysis that the attitudinal resources are essential to construe and balance the identities in a discourse.
