Language Resources of Children’s Fantasy and their Translation Studies: A Study of Alice in Wonderland and Its Chinese Translations

Abstract: In comparison with adults’ literature translation, translating for children is often assumed to be a simpler activity due to the assumption of its “simplicity” in language. In fact, the literary discourse often has unexpected complexities due to its generic characteristics. This research, on the basis of parallel data of Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland and its Chinese translations, probes into the syntactic features of its language. It is found that the transitivity features have their pragma semiotic meanings at the deeper levels. And all the translators investigated failed to keep the transitivity patterns intact in their translations. The failure may result from their incompetence in handling with the original syntactic features, or from their submission to the norms on translating children’s literature into the target language.
