Abstract: The title of a novel or story serves as magnet to its readers, suggesting the main plots, indicating the major clues and creating a suspense. It is much more challenging for a translator to translate the title of such a work than to entitle the work for its writer. Sidney Shapiro, who was honored “hero of translation”, completed translation of 98 Chinese novels and stories, and his translation of the titles of such works is a result of his inventiveness. The paper, by means of quantitative analysis, probes into Shapiro's maneuvers of title translations from such aspects as following the original, dynamic representation, content particularization and employing punctuation. The authors contend that such maneuvers results in a combination of semantical expressiveness and spiritual faithfulness, investing new glamor into the original.
