My View of the Legal Foreign Language Teaching
    WANG Qiang
    2017, 17 (05):  6-8.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.05.001
    Abstract ( 312 )   PDF (665KB) ( 78 )
Along with the development of globalization, the international contracts in the field of law are becoming increasingly frequent. As the bridge of communication, legal foreign languages are even more crucial, and thus the inter-disciplinary talent with the academic background of both jurisprudence and foreign languages is becoming gradually favored. Considering the fact that the legal foreign language posesses the compounded character of both legal researches and linguistic application, we desiderate to explore a more systematic and effective pattern of the related education. The German Law is the typical example of continental law system, therefore legal German occupies the vital position of the legal foreign languages as its direct carrier. With the weakness of the legal German teaching in our country, which only the mere analysis of the linguistic phenomena is focused while the the combination of language and jurisprudence teaching is neglected, this paper is trying to offer a reforming way to combine teaching with the research of the code. This paper also demonstrates its necessity, feasibility and practical solutions of this offering, aiming at promoting the reformation in the legal German education and even in the whole education of legal foreign languages.

Assessment for Learning: A Study on the Construction of Effective Peer Feedback Model and Its Learning Effects
LIU Xinghua, JI Xiaoling, YU Jiying
    2017, 17 (05):  9-15.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.05.002
    Abstract ( 330 )   PDF (3346KB) ( 105 )
The feasibility and usefulness of peer feedback in Chinese EFL writing classroom is still largely a controversial topic and many problems associated with peer feedback have also been frequently reported which include low interest, superficiality and no reflective thinking. In response to this realistic concern, the current study employs self-regulated learning as its theoretical framework to design and implement a peer-feedback-embedded EFL writing curriculum. After a 16-week trial, it is found that students have made statistically significant progress in writing performance and reflective thinking scale. Students are also reported to be very satisfied with the new curriculum. Hence it is suggested that in order to take advantage of the great learning potential offered by peer feedback, teachers should consider and build their own confidence in incorporating peer feedback in their writing classroom.

    CHANG Xinping, ZHU Changquan
    2017, 17 (05):  16-20.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.05.003
    Abstract ( 314 )   PDF (1765KB) ( 198 )
The National Matriculation English Test (NMET) employs a new item format: Text-based Grammatical Completion task. This paper reports a validation study on this new item format by means of a multi-dimensional discourse analysis with the intention to predict its potential washback effect on future EFL education in primary and middle schools in China. The case analysis of the 2014-item reveals multiple intentions of the test writers, and different kinds of competencies have been found to be elicited by the new item type, by which a new understanding of “grammar” is conveyed. The findings demonstrate that the implementation of the new test format will trigger a positive and facilitating washback effect on future primary and secondary EFL education in China. This research is significant not only in conducting a case analysis, but also in introducing a new method of text-based test method validation.

The Application of Minto Pyramid to the Teaching of English Academic Presentation Courses by PENG Yanghui
    WANG Tongshun, ZOU Hui
    2017, 17 (05):  27-33.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.05.005
    Abstract ( 379 )   PDF (2184KB) ( 71 )
Minto Pyramid, proposed by Barbara Minto, is a way to organize the overall structure of a writing. Through the use of a pyramid structure, writers can introduce the subject matter and complete the body part with a question-solution template and effectively summarize the grouping of ideas. This paper discusses the incorporation of Minto Pyramid into English academic presentation course, thus solving some of the obvious problems students have, including inadequate topics, loose structure and less concise summary statements. Two outlines, written by the same group of students before and after the teacher's intervention, are analyzed and rated. The data processed by SPSS indicates the remarkable effect of Minto Pyramid on teaching. Currently when textbooks and documentation on English academic presentation are in great shortage, Minto Pyramid is of great value, which is easy to learn and practice as it offers practical templates and testing principles.

A Communities-of-practice Approach to Simulated International Conference: A Survey Report
    PENG Hua
    2017, 17 (05):  40-47.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.05.007
    Abstract ( 316 )   PDF (3511KB) ( 72 )
In contrast to relatively well-researched area of EAP course design and written research genre, spoken research genre such as conference presentations (CPs) seems to have attracted scant attention from Chinese EAP practitioners. Few practice-based programmes are available to bolster EAP learners in their oral communications in academic settings. Relevant empirical studies are also missing in the scholarship. The current study has intended to look into this uncharted area and translate some of the insight into the EAP curriculum design or course book writing. Simulated International Conference (SIC) which adopts a communities-of-practice approach and draws on genre theory has been running for three terms. The questionnaire results indicate that the model of CoPs, SIC configuration and topic selection have all been generally acknowledged among participants of the programme as a way to boost EAP learners' generic competence. Gender and disciplinary profile of the participants have no influence upon this acceptance. Their diversified academic level and degree programme explain some of the differences. The current study intends to call for joint effort among EAP teaching practitioners and textbook writers to engage learners in more meaningful and fruitful practices so that they can effectively participate in academic communities as full members.

A Study of Chinese Grass-roots Anti-Japanese Resistance—A Corpus-based Semantic Analysis of Dragon Seed by Pearl S. Buck
    FANG Ying, ZHOU Weijing
    2017, 17 (05):  54-59.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.05.009
    Abstract ( 509 )   PDF (3596KB) ( 65 )
In 1938, the darkest period in China's Anti-Japanese War, American woman writer Pearl Buck was awarded the Nobel Prize of literature for her notable works providing epic depiction of wartime China, realistic representation of ordinary Chinese people's heroic fighting against fascist Japan, and her great studies of human ideals passing over widely separated racial boundaries. Dragon Seed, one of Pearl Buck's greatest works on China's Anti-Japanese War, has attracted lots of researchers on Pearl Buck from its historical themes to unique narrative techniques, yet few of them have focused on the author's primary emphasis on Chinese grass-roots efforts in Anti-Japanese Resistance. With the help of Wmatrix 3.0 and GraphColl 2.0.0, the present study adopts a corpus-based semantic analysis of Dragon Seed with the comparison to her eight other similar works and reveals that anti-Japanese motivations, battle fields, tactics of Chinese civil forces as well as their considerations of the war contributed to Pearl Buck's great art of portraying China's grass-roots Anti-Japanese Resistance. The results shed light on Pearl Buck and her works on China's Anti-Japanese War.

Investment of New Glamor into the Original: A Probe into Sidney Shapiro's Maneuvers of English Translation of Titles of Chinese Novels and Stories
    REN Dongsheng, LV Ming
    2017, 17 (05):  72-76.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.05.012
    Abstract ( 385 )   PDF (1771KB) ( 74 )
The title of a novel or story serves as magnet to its readers, suggesting the main plots, indicating the major clues and creating a suspense. It is much more challenging for a translator to translate the title of such a work than to entitle the work for its writer. Sidney Shapiro, who was honored “hero of translation”, completed translation of 98 Chinese novels and stories, and his translation of the titles of such works is a result of his inventiveness. The paper, by means of quantitative analysis, probes into Shapiro's maneuvers of title translations from such aspects as following the original, dynamic representation, content particularization and employing punctuation. The authors contend that such maneuvers results in a combination of semantical expressiveness and spiritual faithfulness, investing new glamor into the original. A masterly way of translation thinking and re-creative artistry Shapiro illustrates in his transfer of the titles of Chinese novels and stories proves an insight into Chinese literary works “going-out”.

New Thoughts on the Teaching of Translation Technology
    XU Bin, GUO Hongmei
    2017, 17 (05):  96-101.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.05.014
    Abstract ( 325 )   PDF (2758KB) ( 70 )
The value and importance of translation technology have been recognized by language service providers and translation training institutes. However, some scholars still hold attitudes that belittle the teaching of translation technology. Based on the teaching experience of two decades, the author of this paper holds that (1) well organized training programs can help promote the proficiency of the propagation of translation technology; (2) translation technology training should not be limited to the training of use of a certain CAT tool, but try to develop the trainees ability in solving problems with computer applications; and (3) the sense and ability of applying translation technology is complementary to translation competence, which can help translation learners adapt to the production process of modern language service industry.
