Abstract: Inference processing is crucial to successful discourse comprehension, which to a large extent depends on the inference generation. The paucity of language learners' inferencing ability would result in incomplete construction of a coherent mental representation of the text. Failure to infer the implied meaning of the text has become a problem urgently needed to be solved for language learners. Based on the elaboration of the concept of inference and its characteristics as well as the main type and theoretical models of inference during text reading, this paper tries to analyze the causes of the insufficient inferencing ability, with the combination of the status quo of EFL learners' reading comprehension ability, and explore the strategies for the cultivation of their inferencing ability.
