XU Jinfen, LIU Wenbo, LEI Pengfei
    2017, 17 (06):  3-10.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.06.001
    Abstract ( 311 )   PDF (4475KB) ( 160 )
The complex, dynamic and nonlinear development of reading strategies in EFL teaching environment can be viewed as a complex and dynamic system. Previous research misses the longitudinal and dynamic feature of L2 learners' reading strategy development from elementary to higher education. Meanwhile, current reading strategy instruction fails to address the consistency of foreign language learning across different stages. From the perspective of complex dynamic system theory and based on literature review of relevant research, this paper reinterprets the features of the system of L2 reading strategies and thereupon discusses in detail teaching philosophies and principles of L2 reading strategies. It is hoped that this paper can provide cognitional and methodological guidance for teachers so as to achieve consistency in reading strategy instruction across different stages.

Inference Generation in Discourse Processing and the Cultivation of Language Learners' Inferencing Ability
    FAN Lin, WANG Zhen
    2017, 17 (06):  11-16.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.06.002
    Abstract ( 410 )   PDF (1118KB) ( 143 )
Inference processing is crucial to successful discourse comprehension, which to a large extent depends on the inference generation. The paucity of language learners' inferencing ability would result in incomplete construction of a coherent mental representation of the text. Failure to infer the implied meaning of the text has become a problem urgently needed to be solved for language learners. Based on the elaboration of the concept of inference and its characteristics as well as the main type and theoretical models of inference during text reading, this paper tries to analyze the causes of the insufficient inferencing ability, with the combination of the status quo of EFL learners' reading comprehension ability, and explore the strategies for the cultivation of their inferencing ability.

    LIANG Xiaobo
    2017, 17 (06):  27-38.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.06.004
    Abstract ( 288 )   PDF (11953KB) ( 52 )
Reading is a basic activity for people to obtain information and knowledge. It is also a heatedly debated issue in the academic circle both domestically and abroad. At present, the studies at home and abroad, after experiencing a process of slow increase in the last century, have won great attention and interests since the entry of this new century, and this is especially true for the studies of reading in teaching, methods, strategies and means. It should be pointed out that reading in the current time has displayed news features, and the reading activity has come up with new challenges. As a result, a theory of reading from new perspective is proposed. The new theory is interpreted from three dimensions from text, readers to the world, which is helpful to give a new understanding of reading in the field of direction, aim, starting point and essence. This theory can offer a new approach to the defects and predicament confronted by the reading activity.

Processing English Mono-morphemic Nouns and Verbs for English Learners of Chinese: An ERP Study
CHEN Shifa, ZHU Lihui, WANG Ya, YANG Xin, GU Xiaolan, YANG Lianrui
    2017, 17 (06):  51-56.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.06.007
    Abstract ( 419 )   PDF (1838KB) ( 154 )
The paper investigates the underlying mechanism of English mono-morphemic nouns and verbs for in English learners of Chinese based on the data obtained by ERP technology. It mainly investigates two questions: (1) Do English learners of Chinese share the same underlying mechanism in processing English mono-morphemic nouns and verbs? (2) Does word frequency influence processing English mono-morphemic nouns and verbs? By analyzing and comparing P150, P250 and N400 ERP components elicited by English nouns and verbs respectively, we find that there exist significant main effects of word class in P250 and N400 components, that the interactive effect of word class and frequency is marginally significant in terms of P250, and that the main effect of word frequency is marginally significant in terms of N400. Therefore, it is concluded that English learners of Chinese employ different mechanism to process English mono-morphemic nouns and verbs, and that word frequency has an influence in processing English mono-morphemic nouns and verbs, and that the semantically driven noun-verb disassociation can be found in the process of English mono-morphemic nouns and verbs and it is affected by word frequency.

Interpreting Moral Assertions from the Perspective of Implicature Theory
    MEI Xuan
    2017, 17 (06):  57-61.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.06.008
    Abstract ( 292 )   PDF (1035KB) ( 65 )
The typical characteristic of moral assertions is to “express”speakers' moral attitudes. Conventionalists claim that the producing of moral attitudes relies on the compositionality of moral assertions, because the attitude triggers (like “good”, “right” or “wrong”) can denote either natural or moral properties in virtue of which utterers' attitudes are manifested directly or indirectly. However, for conversationalists, moral attitudes are viewed as a sort of generalized conversational implicature (GCI), since moral attitudes stem from "what is implicated" in moral utterances and share basic features of GCI. Therefore, this paper aims to reveal that, in interpreting moral assertions, both the conventionalist methodologies and their resulting views are questionable for the reason that they can neither define the natural properties clearly nor expound the moral properties without involving conversational implicature. In contrast, conversationalist argumentation is preferable in that it not only explains the practicality of moral assertions but also provides a new resolution to the amoralist puzzle.

Multiliteracy Strategies in Teaching Business English
    LIU Ping, YOU Xiaoye
    2017, 17 (06):  66-71.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.06.010
    Abstract ( 279 )   PDF (1449KB) ( 114 )
Business English aims to cultivate in college graduates both subject knowledge and foreign language skills. In light of the New London Group and Low, we first argue for a pedagogy of multiliteracies in business English. We then examine the pedagogical practices of ten business instructors at GDUFS by means of class observations and interviews. It reveals most of the teachers practiced this pedagogy partially by focusing on the verbal mode. They made extensive use of multimodal resources in classroom teaching to enact situated practice, overt instruction, critical framing, and transformed practice. We conclude by arguing for more research on situated practices in the classroom in order to articulate a robust pedagogy of multiliteracies in business English.

A Study on Equivalence in Legal Translation from the Pragmatic Perspective
    LI Jin
    2017, 17 (06):  86-89.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.06.013
    Abstract ( 304 )   PDF (965KB) ( 143 )
Achieving an equivalent translation is the target of legal translation. But as the legal translation is the translation between both legal systems and language systems involving factors such as language, law, society and history, it is impossible to achieve absolute equivalent legal translation. Legal translation shall be seen as a pragmatic process and TT readers' comprehension is the key element for achieving the equivalence, so factor that influence the pragmatic process of legal translation shall be studied carefully.

Language Service in Web Platforms of Cross-border Electronic Commerce
    YAN Tiangang, FENG Quangong
    2017, 17 (06):  96-101.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2017.06.015
    Abstract ( 298 )   PDF (2351KB) ( 116 )
The web platforms of Cross-border Electronic Commerce (CBEC) are important sites for language service implementation. The analysis of its language service is done by observing typical web platforms of CBECs and their language service partners to analyze the language service therein, mostly from its construction mode and service mode. There are four kinds of basic construction modes: self-building, co-building with sellers, with domestic people and with language service providers (LSP). Driven by forces of people, information and technology/tools, the service modes include human translation, crowdsourcing translation, CBEC language service training, machine translation, and post-editing of machine translation. The major problem in the language service of CBEC web platforms lies in their throughput ability of translation data. Other problems are most seen in translation, localization and among co-builders. For now, some tentative solutions can already be given to some of these problems.
