Abstract: Onscreen marking (OSM), as one of the emerging marking mediums, can perform an important role in improving marking quality and reducing marking errors. The current paper lays out the uptake of OSM worldwide and outlines a series of validation studies conducted for the English subject of Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) with the support of the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA). Results of the validation studies showed that (1) scores obtained from OSM were statistically comparable to those from paper-based marking (PBM); (2) OSM did not affect candidates' scores, with candidates receiving comparable scores in either OSM or PBM; (3) markers' attitudes towards OSM were overall positive. The paper ends with some observations regarding further avenues for investigation into the effectiveness and applicability of OSM, providing implications for the use of OSM in other contexts.
